TACOMA, Wash. - An early goal forced the Puget Sound Loggers to
play from behind but they showed some heart, using two second half
scores to pull past the Whitman Missionaries, 2-1, in a Northwest
Conference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field at
Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Missionaries took the early lead when Sam Freedman dribbled
the ball around the left half of the box before unleashing a
powerful shot in the 13th minute that finished in the lower right
corner of the net, just past the diving fingertips of Logger keeper
Chris McDonald (Newton, Mass./Noble & Greenough) and the
Loggers quickly had to adjust to playing from behind.
In the second half, the Loggers finally had some good luck come
their way as Michael Dooley (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) found
Sean Rice (Boulder, Colo.) on the far post as Rice finished to tie
the game up in the 61st minute. The Loggers took the lead
just a few minutes later when Whitman was whistled for a hard foul
in the box and Derek Woodworth (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep)
successfully converted the penalty kick as Puget Sound collected
the 2-1 victory.
McDonald finished with three saves on six total Whitman shots,
including just one in the second half, to collect the win.
Whitman keeper Nic McDonald made five saves on the game, allowing
the two goals. The Missionaries also had a team save as Puget
Sound outshot Whitman, 12-6, on the game.
The Loggers are next in action on Saturday when they travel down
to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific.
