TACOMA, Wash. - Putting up a season-high 21 assists, the
15th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers shared the love as they made easy
work of the Linfield Wildcats, 75-56, in a Northwest Conference
women's basketball game on Saturday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse
in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers took the lead 50 seconds into the game on a
three-pointer by sophomore Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park,
Wash./Shorecrest) and never looked back, pushing the led to nine
points with 7:17 left to go in the first half. Things got
even rosier for the Loggers at the end of the half, using a 12-2
run to go up by 16 points heading into the break leading 30-14.
Linfield looked like they might be able to make it a game, going
on a 26-10 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to
pull within one point, 41-40. The Loggers turned the table
from that point, going on a 21-2 run over the next seven minutes to
pull ahead by 20 points with 5:17 left to go. The 'Cats
battled the deficit back into the teens but the Loggers hit their
shots to the very end to take the 75-56 victory.
The Loggers were led by 18 points from freshman Kelsey McKinnis
(Ashland, Ore.), who also had a team-high seven assists on the
night. Riordan finished the night with 16 points while Claire
Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) added 14 points to move into
12th on the Loggers all-time scoring list with 1,018 points.
Freshman Lindsay Layland (Homer, Alaska) got the
double-double, scoring 10 points and bringing down 10 rebounds in
the win.
Linfield was led by 19 points from Gretchen Owens and 17 points
from Kelsey Forrest. Lindsey Gummersall chipped in 11 points
to go with a team-high eight rebounds in the losing effort.
Linfield was doomed by 23 turnovers in the game.
The Loggers hit the road next week, traveling to Parkland on
Tuesday evening to take on Pacific Lutheran. Tip with the
Lutes is set for 6:00 p.m. at Olson Auditorium.
