Defensive Effort Keys Another Logger Victory

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team turned in another solid performance with a 68-45 victory over Willamette on Friday. Jocelyn Riordan scored 17 points and Lindsay Layland was just two rebounds shy of another double-double.

The Loggers scored the first five points of the game an never looked back as they built a 34-17 lead by halftime. Riordan scored 12 of her points in the first half to lead the Loggers. The Logger defense also held the Bearcats to 25.8 percent shooting from the floor and no three-pointers on six attempts.

"Foundationally, our defensive discipline and pressure on the ball and those fundamentals of defense are key for us," said head coach Loree Payne. "Defense and rebounding are the things we can control."

The defense remained stingy in the second half as the Bearcats shot 25.9 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 11 times. Layland continued to control the paint as she came away with a pair of steals in addition to her 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Loggers overcame 21 turnovers with a solid defense that forced 24 Willamette turnovers and 25.9 percent shooting in the game.

"Since our first game, our focus everyday has been team defense," said Riordan. "That's kind of what Loggers have always prided themselves on."

The Logger defense has held opponents to 45 points or less in each of its last four games to key a four-game winning streak and a NWC-opening win. The Loggers host Pacific tomorrow at 6 p.m.
