TACOMA, Wash. - In a night that solidified the second seed in
the Northwest Conference tournament, the 15th-ranked Puget Sound
Loggers beat the visiting Pacific Boxers 59-47 in a Northwest
Conference women's basketball matchup on Think Pink night at
Memorial Fieldhouse during their penultimate regular season game.
The game got off to a slow start, as only 10 total points were
scored in the opening six minutes of play. The Loggers built a 9-3
lead at the 13:39 mark that they slowly saw disappear, as the
Boxers gained a 9-12 advantage a few minutes later. The half would
feature five lead changes in the last 10 minutes as the teams
battled to a 24-24 score at halftime.
Only four players had scored by halftime, with senior Claire Ely
(Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) leading the way with nine. In what
was a poor shooting night for both teams, Puget Sound shot only 36
percent in the first period and would finish the game hitting only
34.4 percent of their shots. Pacific finished at 36.5 percent from
the field.
In the second half the Loggers took the lead for good at the
16:13 mark, maintaining a double digit margin for most of the
period before finally pulling out the twelve point victory. Ely
would finish with a near triple-double, grabbing seven boards to go
with her 10 assists and 17 points. Senior Natasha Ludwig (Hilo,
Hawaii/Waiakea) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in 31 minutes,
while freshman Lindsey Layland (Homer, Alaksa/Homer) pulled down 11
of her own, seven of which were offensive. Puget Sound finished
with a 47-31 rebounding advantage, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds
as a team.
Erica Schultz lead Pacific with 17 points, five rebounds and
three blocks in 31 minutes, but was the only member of the Boxers
to score in double figures. The Boxers only got two points off
their bench to 10 from the Loggers.
Puget Sound will take on Lewis and Clark tomorrow night on
senior night during their regular season finale. Tip-off is set for
6 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse.
