TACOMA, Wash. - After falling behind 2-1 following doubles, the
Puget Sound Loggers put together a strong effort in singles but
fell just short, falling to the Willamette Bearcats, 5-4, in a
Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday at UPS Tennis
Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.
The Bearcats controlled the top two doubles positions but the
Loggers were able to pound out a win in the third spot as the team
of Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill./The Ethel Walker School) and
Katie Hurley (Chicago, Ill./New Trier) earned a 9-7 win over
Emily Bee and Jamie Slonaker.
In singled play, the Loggers earned wins from Maddie Thiesse
(Chanhassen, Minn./Holy Family) and Ada Yu (Salem, Ore./McKay) as
neither player had much issue with their opponent. Dombrow
also earned a victory at the sixth spot but Willamette was able to
win at number one and number five to put all the pressure on the
second spot.
Sophomore Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Punahou) won the
first set 6-1 over Alyssa Morrison but Morrison was able to even
the match at 6-1 to force a third and deciding set. Holtz
gave it her best but Morrison was able to take the third set, 6-4,
to clinch the match for the 'Cats.
The Loggers will look to get into the win column on Friday when
they play host to George Fox in a match set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
