TACOMA, Wash. – Getting a bonus two points right out of
the gate, the Puget Sound Loggers held off the George Fox Bruins,
6-3, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match to pick
up their first win of the season on Friday afternoon at the UPS
Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.
Because of just five players on their roster, George Fox was forced
to forfeit both the number three doubles and the number six singles
matches to give Puget Sound an early 2-0 lead.
In doubles play, the Loggers' number two team of Ada Yu
(Salem, Ore./McKay) and Maddie Thiesse (Chanhassen, Minn./Holy
Family) earned an 8-5 win over Lilya Abildayeva and Cara Griffith
but the GFU team of Mollie Robinson and Molly Beaumont won a tight
match at the number one doubles, defeating Sam Taylor (Hood River,
Ore./Oregon Episcopal) and Maddie Holtz (Honolulu,
Hawai'i/Punahou), 9-8.
In singles play, Beaumont and Robinson stole a pair of wins again
but Thiesse and Yu , along with sophomore Devin Fields (San
Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding), all recorded wins to give the
Loggers' their first Northwest Conference victory in 18
matches, dating back to Feb. 22, 2009.
The Loggers will look for win number two of 2010 on Saturday when
they play host to Lewis & Clark, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at UPS
Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma.
