SALEM, Ore. - Holding their opponents to a season-low 33 points,
the 18th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers breezed by the Willamette
Bearcats, 76-33, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game
on Friday night at Cone Field House in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first half, the Bearcats stayed with the Loggers briefly,
scoring the game's first basket but the Loggers found themselves up
by nine points with 15:04 left to play in the first half. The
lead hit double-digits with 14:07 left on a jumper by Jocelyn
Riordan (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest). The Bearcats
hit a three-pointer with 7:05 left in the first half for their 14th
point of the night but that would be their final points for nearly
14 minutes of play as the Loggers used an 11-0 run to end the half
up 37-14.
In the second half, the Bearcats continued to struggle from the
field as the Loggers pushed the lead to 51-14 before Willamette was
able to get their first basket of the second half. The
Loggers continued to push the Bearcats, getting the lead to 40
points with 2:11 remaining as Puget Sound breezed the rest of the
way to collect their 10th conference win of the season with the
76-33 victory.
The Loggers were led by 27 points from senior Claire Ely (Walnut
Creek, Calif./Northgate), who also added five assists and four
steals in the win. Riordan finished the night with 13 points
and 14 rebounds. As a team, the Loggers outrebounded the
'Cats, 53-36, and forced 22 Willamette turnovers.
The Bearcats were led by 10 points from Alex Zennan, who
accounted for nearly one-third of Willamette's team points.
The Bearcats went the entire game without attempting a single free
throw.
The Loggers will have the rest of the weekend off before heading
off to Spokane next Friday to take on Whitworth. Tip with the
Pirates is set for 7:30 p.m. at Whitworth Fieldhouse.
