SPOKANE, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers held a 2-1 lead after
doubles play but the Whitworth Pirates swept singles play to win
the Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Friday afternoon in
Spokane, Wash.
The Loggers put the regionally-ranked Pirates onto the ropes in
doubles play as the number one team of Nick Kelley (Denver,
Colo./Kent Denver) and Mike Cutter (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory over
Michael Shelton and Colin Zalewski.
The Pirates were able to pick up a win in the second position
but the Logger team of Scooter Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho/Community)
and Ben Miller (Silverdale, Wash./Central Kitsap) earned an 8-3 win
over Kellen Oetgen and Colin Barrett.
With the Loggers holding the slim lead, Whitworth came out
determined in singles play, sweeping all six matches in straight
sets to collect the 7-2 victory.
The road trip won't get any easier for the Loggers on Saturday
when they head down to Walla Walla, Wash. to take on
nationally-ranked Whitman.
