Lutes Clip Loggers, 6-3

TACOMA, Wash. - A pair of three-set victories was enough to propel the Pacific Lutheran Lutes past the Puget Sound Loggers as the cross-town rivals met in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Sunday at the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.

The Lutes took the lead following singles play as PLU picked up 8-4 wins in both the first and third positions.  Puget Sound was able to stay within a point as the team of Ada Yu (Salem, Ore./McKay) and Maddie Thiesse (Chanhassen, Minn./Holy Family) earned an 8-6 win over Heidi Weston and Kristina Aarsvold.

In singles play, the Loggers earned a pair of wins as Thiesse was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Ali Burnside in the third position and senior Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill./The Ethel Walker School) was a 6-4, 7-6 winner in the sixth spot.

The match came down to the first and fifth positions but the Lutes were able to pick up three-set victories to earn the win.  Samantha Taylor (Hood River, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) came close to picking up her first individual win of the year in the top spot before falling to Ashley Coats, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.  In the fifth spot, sophomore Devin Fields nearly clipped Deanna Ellmer, falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The Loggers will remain at home next weekend as they play host to Whitman on Friday night before hosting defending NWC champion Whitworth on Saturday.
