TACOMA, Wash. - Starting the game as catcher and finishing the
game as pitcher, senior Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) hit
every stop along the way, playing all nine positions as the Puget
Sound Loggers defeated the Saint Martin's Saints, 8-4, in a
non-conference baseball game on Tuesday at Logger Field in Tacoma,
Wash.
The Loggers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first as
Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) scored on a fielders choice
by Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) to give UPS the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Loggers used two bombs to extend
the lead as Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of New
Mexico) hit a three-run home run to left center and Will Mentor
(Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) hit a two-run home run to left field
as the Loggers held a 6-0 lead after three frames.
Two more runs came for the Loggers in the sixth inning as Matt
Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) doubled to left center to score
Resnik and then Coberly singled to left field to score Cox.
Saint Martin's picked up a run in the eighth and then took
advantage of a tired Nohara to go for three unearned runs in the
top of the ninth as the Loggers picked up the 8-4 win to sweep the
season series, two games to one.
Nohara's trip around the diamond was scripted out in advance by
Logger head coach Brian Billings. After starting the game at
catcher, Nohara moved to first base in the second. He then
played second base in the third inning, third base in the fourth
inning, and shortstop in the fifth inning. Nohara moved to
the outfield beginning in the sixth innnings, moving from left to
center to right field before closing out the game on the mound,
where he is the Loggers' usual third starter.
Not to be lost in Nohara's rare feat were solid performances by
some other Logger players. Coberly finished the game
four-for-five from the plate with two RBIs while Resnik wen
three-for-four with three runs scored. Starting pitcher
Taylor Volz (Portland, Ore. /Grant) pitched six great innings,
allowing just four hits while striking out eight.
The Loggers head down to Forest Grove, Ore. this weekend for a
Northwest Conference series with the Pacific Boxers.
