TACOMA, Wash. – The No. 13 Puget Sound women's soccer team
won in dramatic fashion on Friday with a 2-1 overtime victory over
UC Santa Cruz. With the pair of goals, the Loggers have scored
exactly two goals in each of their three games this year.
The game-winner came just a few minutes into the first overtime
period when Kylie
Beeson found the back of the net for her first goal of the
season. The ball was played up to Christine Isabella who
dribbled through the defense and found Beeson all alone on the
right side of the goalie's box. Beeson quickly fired the ball to
score the game-winner.
An unfortunate own goal off a Santa Cruz free kick forced the
overtime. The Loggers had controlled much of the game until that
point.
"I am really proud of the way we fought through adversity, with
the own goal and overtime," said head coach Randy Hanson. "We'll
keep working to get better and come out ready to play again on
Sunday."
The Loggers also encountered adversity in trying to get the ball
in the net. Banana Slug goalkeeper Monica Chazen came up with four
big saves throughout the game. All four saves came on breakaways
and prime scoring opportunities for the Loggers.
Theresa Henle was
the first to hang up a mark on the scoreboard when she controlled a
rebound in front of the net and fired it past the sprawling
goalkeeper for the go-ahead goal.
The Loggers are in action again on Sunday when they face No. 17
Claremont at noon on Peyton Field.
