TACOMA, Wash. – A pair of first half goals lifted the
Puget Sound men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Linfield
on Saturday at Peyton Field. Andrew White's goal just before
the halftime buzzer ended up being the difference in the game.
After Linfield (1-3-1, 0-1) dominated possession in the early
minutes, the Loggers (4-1-2, 1-0) got an opportunity to take the
lead when Linfield was called for a handball in the goalie box.
Landon Gauthier took the penalty kick and converted for the second
time in as many tries this season to give the Loggers the early 1-0
lead in the 21st minute.
Momentum swung a bit the Loggers way although they were outshot
9-4 in the first half. Chris McDonald came up with three of his
four saves in the opening half.
With time winding down in the first half, a throw-in put a
bouncing ball into the goalie box with both teams scrambling to
gain possession. Just before the horn sounded for the half, the
ball settled at White's feet and he promptly pushed it into
the net to give the Loggers a 2-0 lead going into the locker
room.
The Loggers gained all the momentum going into the locker room
and fired nine shots in the second half although none found the
back of the net. The Wildcats closed the gap with a goal in the
80th minute but could not find the equalizer.
The Loggers head back to the pitch tomorrow for a NWC matchup
with Willamette.
