PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Puget Sound women's tennis team's season-opening match ended in a 6-3 loss to Lewis & Clark on Friday. All three Logger wins came in singles matches, including a win from freshman Logan Thompson in her first collegiate match.
Thompson's win came in the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-1 over Makena McCluskey. Ada Yu also earned a 6-3,6-1 win at the No. 5 spot while Marissa Friedman defeated Olivia Sweetman 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the No. 6 match. Friedman's win was the only match to go into the third set.
The Pios took all three doubles matches although Thompson and Friedman pushed Whitney DeBree and Jill Coleman in the No. 2 doubles match before falling 8-6. Madison Holtz and Maddie Thiesse dropped the No. 1 doubles match 8-1 to Amalia Nilsson and Isabelle Borris. Jenna Gerdsen and Yu fell 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles match to the Pios' duo of Sweetman and McCluskey.
Nilsson defeated Holtz 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match while the Pios' DeBree took the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-2 over Thiesse. The Pios final win came when Borris defeated Gerdsen in the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-1.
The Loggers take on Willamette this afternoon.
