Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound baseball team dropped its season-opener 10-5 to Saint Martin's on Sunday. Three Loggers recorded their first career hits in the maroon and white despite the loss.
The Loggers (0-1) were shaking off the rust of the offseason in the first couple innings while the Saints (1-6) already had six games under their belts. The difference showed in the first three frames as the Saints jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead.
Travis Jones hit a homer in the first inning to give the Saints a 2-0 lead and the offense kept coming with one more run in the second and three in the third. The Saints also scored another run in the fourth and one more in the fifth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.
The Loggers finally responded in the bottom of the fifth when Dakota Resnik smashed a bases loaded double down the left field line to plate two runs. Kainoa Correa and Nick Cherniske scored on the play. The double was the 37th of Resnik's career, tying him with Michael Olsen for the most career doubles in Logger history.
"We won the last five innings. Early on we came out a little flat," said head coach Brian Billings. "We had a lot of freshmen get their first experience today. A couple freshman got their first hits and another looked really good on the mound."
The Saints pushed two more runs across in the seventh but the Loggers answered with three in the bottom half. After Christian Carter's leadoff walk, Correa hit a double to the left center gap that scored Carter. Paul Webster singled in the next at-bat and Andrew Grady brought home Correa with another single. Tucker Barney recorded his first career RBI when his groundout brought in Webster.
Both teams would be held scoreless over the final two innings for a 10-5 final score. Tommy DeBoer picked up the Saints' first win of the year, tossing five innings and allowing just two unearned runs on three hits. Josh Grenier led the Saints offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored four times.
For the Loggers, Barney, Webster and Cherniske all recorded their first collegiate hits while Lucas Stone took the mound for the first time in his collegiate career. Stone went two innings and gave up one run while striking out two.
The Loggers will remain home next week to take on Whitworth in a four-game nonconference series. The first doubleheader will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
