Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound baseball team earned a 2-2 split with Whitworth in its four-game series this weekend. The Loggers (2-3) dropped the early game 11-4 but rebounded with a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1 – 4-11
The Pirates took advantage of eight Logger errors in the early game to score six unearned runs and come away with an 11-4 victory. The Pirates (4-4) also pounded out 12 hits in the game with four players recording multiple hits.
Dakota Resnik was 3-for-4 in the game, including two doubles and an RBI. Andrew Grady also had a pair of hits for the Loggers.
The Pirates came out on fire despite the cool morning weather. In the first inning, they sprinted out to a 4-0 lead thanks, in part, to three Logger errors. Tyler Pfeffer got the scoring started with a two-RBI single and the Pirates continued to roll.
The Loggers got a run back when Resnik led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch. However, the Pirates continued to pour it on with a pair of runs in the third and another pair in the fourth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Kyle Krustangel brought in both runs in the third with a double while both runs in the fourth scored on a Logger error.
The Loggers put across one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close the gap to 8-4. In the fourth and fifth innings, the Loggers had the bases loaded but could only scratch out one run. Pirate pitcher CJ Perry earned the win and shut the door on the Loggers fourth inning rally while Liam O'Brien came in to end the Logger rally in the fifth.
While the Pirates scored three late insurance runs, Eric Anderson tossed three shutout innings for the Pirates to earn the save.
Game 2 – 10-6
A determined Logger team came out in the nightcap and jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first and third innings and another two runs in the second on the way to a 10-6 win.
"We hit the ball well today and yesterday for that matter," said head coach Brian Billings. "We scored 20 runs yesterday and 14 more today, which is very encouraging having lost some good hitters to graduation, especially against a good pitching team like Whitworth."
Casey Coberly picked up a two-RBI single in the first to get things started and Kainoa Correa brought in another run to give the Loggers a 3-1 lead. Coberly picked up another RBI later for a 2-for-4, three RBI performance in the nightcap.
Matt Cox stroked his first of two doubles in the second to plate a run for the Loggers and Resnik brought in two more in the third with a two-RBI single. He ended up with five hits and three doubles on the day.
Down 8-1, the Pirates made a furious comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs. Brandon Ellendt got the scoring started with a two-RBI single and the Pirates had the bases loaded after Kevin Valerio was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch in the next at bat plated another run while a Logger error on the play allowed the other two Pirates to score. However, Tad Finnie came into the game and shut the door on the rally without allowing another run.
With an 8-6 lead, freshman Jeff Walton came in and tossed three shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and retired six of the last seven batters in the game. The Pirates loaded the bases in the fifth, but Walton ended the rally with an inning-ending double play.
The Loggers scored two more insurance runs in the sixth to secure the victory.
They will host Central Washington next week in a four-game series on West Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
