Loggers Up Early But Can't Hold Off Willamette Rally

TACOMA, Wash. – After a hard fought battle on Saturday, The University of Puget Sound men's tennis team fell 6-3 to Willamette. The Loggers took an early lead with two doubles wins but Willamette rallied with five singles wins to capture the victory.

Michael Cutter and Alex Harrison moved to 5-0 as a pair with an 8-4 victory over the Bearcats Matt House and Will Cooper. Nick Kelley and Chas Stewart also earned an 8-6 victory over Josh Wong and Garrett Vincent to put the Loggers up 2-1 to start the match.

In No. 1 doubles, Michael Baumgartner and Cody Ferguson defeated Ben Miller and Brent Hoshiba 8-4 to give the Bearcats their first point of the match.

Singles was another story as the Bearcats clinched the match with four straight-set victories. Baumgartner defeated Cutter 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 match while Wong earned a victory by the same score over Stewart in No. 2 singles. At No. 4, Houser defeated the Loggers Brian Burger 6-0, 6-0 and Ferguson clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Kelley at No. 3.

Harrison earned the Loggers only singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vincent. Miller and Cooper battled in the No. 6 match. Miller took the first set but Cooper battled back to take the fifth singles match for Willamette. The final score was 6-7, 6-3, 15-13 with the final set being played as a tiebreak.

The Loggers will head to southern California next week for a trio of matches, starting with Sewanee on Mar. 14.
