Loggers Comeback From Seven Down To Beat Whitworth

Box Score

PASCO, Wash. – Down 8-1 after two innings, the University of Puget Sound baseball team scored 12 unanswered runs to beat Whitworth 13-8 on Sunday. The win captured the season series for the Loggers (7-4, 5-1 NWC).

Taylor Volz, Luke Englert and Cameron Duvall combined to throw seven shutout innings and allowed just one runner past second base over the final seven innings. Volz allowed one run to score in the second but settled in to allow just three hits in three innings of work.

Englert earned the win on the mound, tossing three innings and striking out three. He was nearly perfect as he allowed just one hit and one walk over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Duvall tossed the final two innings and allowed just two hits as the Loggers held on to their newly found lead.

"Volz, Englert and Duvall came in and really gave us a chance to get the momentum back," said head coach Brian Billings. "We had a lot of energy in the dugout and those guys gave us a chance to come back."

As the trio dominated on the mound, the Logger bats went to work in the middle innings.

Gerhard Mulheims and Landon Scott each tallied RBI doubles in the first inning to launch the Bucs to a 5-0 lead. The Loggers took one back in the second with an RBI-single from Nick Cherniske.

The Bucs put up three more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly from Scott, a RBI-triple from Nick Ashley and another RBI single from JR Jarrell. With the runs, the Bucs held a seemingly adequate seven-run lead.

Enter the Logger relievers. Volz, Englert and Duvall shut down the high-powered offense as the Logger bats simultaneously came to life.

Cherniske led off the fifth with a solo homer to cut the lead to 8-2. In the sixth, the Loggers exploded for five runs. Four consecutive singles to open the inning cut the deficit to 8-3. Casey Coberly then scored on a wild pitch. A pair of costly Buc errors allowed three more runs to score as the Loggers climbed back into the game down 8-7.

The Loggers pushed another five runs across in the seventh to take the lead and complete the epic comeback. Matt Cox led off with a solo shot to tie the game at 8-8. Three batters later, the Loggers had the bases loaded and Jeff Walton cashed in with the Loggers second grand slam of the weekend. The slam gave the Loggers a 12-8 lead.

Will Mentor added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI-single and the Loggers held on for a dramatic 13-8 victory.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Loggers will break away from their NWC schedule with a southern California trip next week. The road trip starts with a game at 11 a.m. at Cal Lutheran.
