Box Score THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A spirited comeback fell just short in the University of Puget Sound baseball team's 4-3 loss at Cal Lutheran. The Loggers (7-5) scored all three of their runs in the fifth after falling behind 4-0 in the previous inning.
"It was a good game. We had a lot of energy in the dugout," said head coach Brian Billings. "Robinson threw well again. It was one of those games where we just couldn't get the clutch it but we'll move on and get after it again tomorrow."
Matt Robinson threw 7.2 innings, scattering six hits and striking out five. He allowed all four runs but just two were earned as he took his first loss of the season.
Nicholas DellaValle opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the bottom of second for the Kingsmen (13-6). In the third, the Kingsmen took advantage of a Logger error and scored three runs on a trio of RBI-hits in the inning.
Down 4-0, the Loggers responded with three runs of their own in the fourth. Matt Cox led off with a single, stole second, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Will Mentor and Casey Coberly drew two if the Loggers six walks in the game and both came around to score on a Kingsmen error to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Neither team could get much going offensively over the final five frames as the Kingsmen held on for the win. John LaMoure tossed seven innings and allowed just two Logger hits despite walking five for the win.
The Loggers continue their spring break trip through southern California with two game tomorrow. They will take on Whittier at 10:30 a.m. and Claremont at 3 p.m.
