WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Whitman in Northwest Conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon in the Bratton Tennis Center.
Whitman improved to 3-1 in the NWC and squared its season mark at 3-3. The Loggers slipped to 2-4 in conference and 3-4 overall.
Up 2-1 after doubles, Whitman quickly extended its lead in the team scoring to 4-1 when senior Elise Otto dispatched Maddison Holtz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and sophomore Alyssa Roberg downed Maddie Thiesse by the same score at No. 2
Emily Rolston was the first to finish, scoring a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jenna Gerdsen. Kate Kunkel-Patterson finished next, edging Logan Thompson 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
The two sides split the last two decisions in singles.
Puget Sound's Marissa Friedman tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over first-year Missionary Maggie Eismeier at No. 6 singles.
Whitman junior Lizzy Schiller rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory over Ada Yu.
In doubles, Otto and Roberg cruised to a rapid 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, downing Holtz and Thiesse.
Rolston and Kunkel-Patterson had more of a battle at No. 2, inching ahead 4-3 to start that match. They soon took charge, reeling off four straight games for an 8-3 victory over Friedman and Thompson.
Schiller and Leah Siegel jumped to early leads of 4-1 and 5-2 at No. 3 doubles, but Yu and Gerdsen took the next four games to even the match at 5-all.
The Logger duo stayed hot, winning three of the next four games for an 8-6 win.
Puget Sound returns to Tacoma on Saturday to host College of Idaho in a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
