Lutes Outlast Loggers In Close Match

TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 defeat on Friday in a Northwest Conference match against Pacific Lutheran. Nick Kelley kept up his recent hot streak with a win in singles and doubles.

In the doubles, Kelley and Chas Stewart earned the Loggers one win at #2 with an 8-4 defeat of Daniel Cotton and Michael Paretta. However, PLU (5-5, 4-6 NWC) took the two other doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.

In singles, the Lutes earned three straight set victories to clinch the match. Taylor Dickey defeated George Murphy 6-1, 6-1 and Zack AhYat took a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Scott Finkleman. Cotton defeated Stewart 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match.

The Loggers kept the match tight behind Kelley's 6-4, 6-2 win over Reed Gunstone and Alex Harrison's hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Neal Berg. However, it wasn't quite enough.

Michael Cutter also pushed for a win in the #1 match but came up just shy in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Scott Sheldon.

The Loggers will try to buck their seven-match losing streak at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
