TACOMA, Wash. – A strong showing in the singles portion of the match led the University of Puget Sound women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over Pacific Lutheran on Friday. The Loggers (7-8 4-5 NWC) won their second consecutive match against the Lutes (2-10, 0-10 NWC).
The Loggers dropped two of three doubles to fall behind early. Marissa Friedman and Logan Thompson defeated Amanda Peterson and Hailey Rile 8-1 for the Loggers lone doubles point. In the #1 flight, Tina Aarsvold and Leah Newell defeated Madison Holtz and Maddie Thiesse 9-7 while Caitlyn Hoerr and Saiyare Refaei took an 8-4 decision from Ada Yu and Devin Fields.
It didn't take long for the Loggers to fight back as Thompson defeated Refei 6-0, 6-1 to bring the Loggers even and Jenna Gerdsen's 6-2, 6-2 win over Hoerr regained the lead for the Loggers.
Friedman earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rile and Thiesse's 6-2, 6-5 win over Aarsvold clinched the match for the Loggers. However, Yu went on to win her match 6-2, 7-5 over Deanna Ellmer.
Newell earned the Lutes lone singles point with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Holtz in the #1 flight.
The Loggers will host Willamette tomorrow at 1 p.m. in matchup of the No. 4-5 teams in the NWC standings with just three matches left to play.
