Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – Three first inning runs proved to be just enough as the University of Puget Sound baseball team defeated visiting Pacific 3-2 on Friday. Nate Aguiar earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits over 6.2 innings.
"Nate (Aguiar) threw really well today. He's been our 'tough-luck' guy all year long as far as defensively and scoring runs," said head coach Brian Billings. "It was awesome to get a win for him. He deserves it. He's battled all year long."
Aguiar was lights-out after the Loggers (14-15, 12-7 NWC) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Boxers (21-13-2, 14-8 NWC) had loaded the bases in the first inning with two out before Aguiar produced an inning-ending fly out.
After the Kevin Schwartz's first-inning single, the Boxers did not record a hit until the seventh inning when back-to-back singles ended Aguiar's day. However, Luke Englert entered the game and limited the Boxers' damage to two runs in the seventh to earn his second save.
In the first, the first three Loggers reached base safely and scored for the early 3-0 lead. Dakota Resnik walked, Kainoa Correa singled and Matt Cox walked to load the bases. Jeff Walton's single plated Resnik and kept the bases loaded.
With two outs, Craig Driver blooped a ball into shallow center field and took second with no one covering for a double. He was brought in Correa and Cox for a 3-0 Logger lead.
Aguiar held the Boxers scoreless over the next six innings until Chad Fahey singled in a run with two outs in the seventh and Mike Nagamine scored on a double steal attempt.
Correa and Driver each ended up with two hits in the game as did Nick Cherniske to lead the Loggers at the plate.
The Loggers and Boxers conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at noon. The Loggers will celebrate Senior Day in between the two games.
