Loggers Swept At Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound men's tennis team fell 9-0 to Whitworth on Friday night. With the win, the Pirates (10-9, 7-4 NWC) clinched a spot in the NWC Tournament.

Motivated by a chance to clinch the spot, the Bucs jumped to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams made quick work of the Loggers' (3-12, 2-9 NWC) Michael Cutter and Alex Harrison by an 8-1 score at third doubles. Joe Wales and Cameron Williams soon followed with an 8-3 win over Nick Kelley and Chas Stewart at #2 doubles. The #1 doubles match went down to the wire before Daniel Redfern and Colin Barrett gave Whitworth the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory over George Murphy and Brent Hoshiba.

The closest singles match also occurred at the top of the ladder. Redfern edged Mutter 6-4, 7-5 in two close sets. Zalewski pulled out a tight first set, then cruised with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Stewart at #2 singles. Cameron Williams defeated Murphy 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles.

The bottom half of the ladder went in similar fashion. Wales defeated Kelly 6-4, 6-2 at #4 singles in the closest of the last three matches. Barrett had little trouble in beating Ben Miller 6-1, 6-0 at #5 singles and Henry Williams topped Hoshiba 6-1, 7-6 at #6 singles.

The Loggers will conclude their season at Whitman tomorrow.
