Lutes Edge Loggers In NWC Tennis

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's tennis team came up just short in its upset bid over Pacific Lutheran, falling 6-3. The Loggers (0-12, 0-8 NWC) took a lead early in the singles matches but couldn't hold on for the win.

The Lutes (6-7, 4-4 NWC) took a 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the match. Abe Noyes and John Stevens earned the Loggers point in the #3 match with an 8-3 win over Zack Blakeslee and Noel Oteng-Mensah. Neal Berg and Sam Angel scored PLU's first point by defeating George Murphy and Jake Peterson by the same score. Zack AhYat and Taylor Dickey earned the advantage with an 8-4 win over Michael Cutter and Ben Miller.

Two quick wins in the singles matches gave the Loggers a 3-2 lead. Noyes defeated Oteng-Mensah 6-0, 6-0 in the #5 match and Peterson earned a 6-4, 6-1 win in the #6 match over Blakeslee. The Lutes regained the lead as Dickey won the #2 match 6-4, 6-0 over Cutter and AhYat took the #1 match 6-0, 6-2 over Miller.

The deciding matches came in the middle courts in two hard-fought matches. However, Angel sealed the win for the Lutes with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Murphy at #3. The #4 match went to three sets as Stevens took the first set 2-6. Berg fought back to take the second set 6-3 and won the tiebreaking third set 10-7 for the Lutes' sixth point.

The Loggers head south to Lewis & Clark for another NWC match tomorrow.
