PORTLAND, Ore. – The Puget Sound men's tennis earned its first win of the season on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Lewis & Clark. Abe Noyes three-set win in the #5 match clinched the victory for the Loggers.
Noyes and John Stevens earned the Loggers first point with an 8-2 win in the #3 match. Jake Peterson and George Murphy won 8-6 in the #2 match to earn the early advantage. The Pios duo of Olivier Groot and Quinn Roth-Carter won 8-6 in the #1 match to earn the Pios first point.
Groot defeated Ben Miller in the singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #1. However, Michael Cutter took a 6-2, 6-1 win for the Loggers at #2 and Murphy won 6-1, 6-2 at #3 to bring the Loggers within one point of victory.
The 4-6 matches all went three sets to increase the drama. Lucas Fodor's 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback win at #6 kept the Pio hopes alive and Scott Monismith won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at #4 to tie the match at 4-4.
Noyes dropped the first set of the #5 match but came back to win the next twoand clinch the win for the Loggers with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The Loggers head back down to Oregon next week for matches at Pacific and George Fox.
