TACAOMA, Wash. – A back-and-forth battle ended in a 5-4 loss for the Puget Sound women's tennis team on Friday. Willamette took the early advantage and then won the final two points of the evening to capture the victory.
Sabrina Guitierrez and Shannon Palmer had the Bearcats off to a good start with a 8-0 win at #1 doubles over Maddie Holtz and Josie Dow. Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman then fell 8-3 in the #2 match to Emily Bee and Denise Poltavski. Ada Yu and Maddie Thiesse capture the Loggers lone doubles point 8-3 over Hailey Arnold and Elise Derby in the #3 match.
Down 2-1 going into the singles portion of the match, Thompson defeated Bee 6-0, 6-0 at #4 to even the match. Friedman's 6-0, 6-1 win over Derby at #5 then gave the Loggers a 3-2 advantage. The advantage grew as Dow defeated Arnold at #6 6-1, 6-3. Palmer came away with the 6-0, 6-0 win over Holtz at #1 to bring the Bearcats back within one with two matches to play.
Guittierez captured a key 6-3, 6-1 win at #2 over Jenna Gerdsen to tie the match at 4-4. Moments later, the Bearcats clinched the match as Poltavski defeated Thiesse 6-4, 6-3 at #3.
The Loggers will host Linfield tomorrow at 1 p.m. in another NWC match.
