Box Score TACOMA, Wash.—After dominating the score sheet for 92 minutes, the Puget Sound women's soccer team finally found its way on the scoreboard, besting Lewis & Clark 1-0 in overtime Saturday at Peyton Field.
Amalia Acorda-Fey scored the game-winner for the second straight game, finishing off a cross by Robin Vieira deep in the box. The goal was Acorda-Fey's team-leading third of the season.
The Loggers expected to score earlier in the overtime period when Acorda-Fey was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick with just over a minute gone. Vieira took the attempt, but Pioneer keeper Geena Fong made the last of her eight saves on the day, keeping the Pioneers alive.
For most of the first half, Puget Sound dominated possession, tallying four shots on the period. The earliest chance for Puget Sound came in the eighth minute, when Annie Jonsson got a foot on a cross from inside the box. Jonsson pushed the ball just wide, though, and the ball rolled out for a goal kick.
The best opportunity in the first half came 30 minutes in, when Lauren Swanson sent a dangerous cross into the box. It found the head of Haley Rosenberg, but Rosenberg pushed it into the hands of Lewis & Clark keeper Geena Fong, keeping the match scoreless going into the break.
The Pioneers did put together some attacks in the first 45 minutes, but failed to muster a shot. Two Lewis & Clark attacks were halted by offside calls, however.
Puget Sound actually increased the pressure after halftime forcing 15 shots in the second 45 minutes, five on target. Acorda-Fey opened the frame by firing a shot into the right post just a minute into the half. She had another attempt saved seven minutes later when Fong stepped in front of a free kick off Acorda-Fey.
Acorda-Fey wasn't the only Logger to hit the woodwork as Swanson saw a shot hit the cross bar in the 61st minute of the match. In all, the Loggers took 21 shots during Saturdy's match, nine of them on frame and two of them hitting the frame. Fong made eight saves to keep the Pioneers in the match while Lewis & Clark took two shots total, both coming in the second half and both ending up in the hands of Puget Sound keeper Lauren Thomas.
"We're playing well and we're creating chances; then you just have to kick those in," said Puget Sound head coach Randy Hanson. "Today was a little bit of the same, but we got the goal. We've tied this game before, so in a way we're progressing and so we'll keep going. What I'm encouraged by is that we're playing well and creating chances. From there we'll just work on kicking more of those in."
The Loggers advance to 7-3-1 with a 4-2-1 Northwest Conference record, while the Pioneers fall to 6-2-2, 4-1-2 in conference play.
Puget Sound's women's soccer team returns to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 13, when they host Pacific University. That match will kick off at 12:00 p.m., again at Peyton Field.
