Streak busted: Loggers lose for first time in nine matches

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Puget Sound men's soccer team saw its eight match win streak, the school's longest since 2007, snapped after a 1-0 defeat at Whitworth Saturday in Spokane, Wash.

The Loggers had trouble in the offensive third of the field, only registering three shots in 90 minutes, none of them on goal. The Puget Sound defense saw pressure early on the match, ceding a corner kick in the 2nd minute and allowing a shot off that play a few seconds later. The Pirates attempted five shots in the first 13 minutes, scoring on the fifth when Robby Ubben beat a Puget Sound defender and slid the ball past Logger keeper Nathan King.

Meanwhile, in the 12th minute, the Loggers' Vincent McCluskey tallied a shot, but it went wide of the goalmouth and out for a Whitworth goal kick.

The Logger offense picked up a bit 22 minutes into the match. A Puget Sound attack was called offside in the 23rd minute, and Nick Campanelli nodded a shot towards the Whitworth goal in the 24th, but it cleared the crossbar and went out of bounds.

The last Logger shot on the day came in the 31st minute, when Carson Swope's attempt went wide. The Loggers picked up a couple of corner kicks the final 15 minutes of the first half, but those plays did not amount to much of anything. The Pirates ended the first half with a header by Colin Shockman which King saved with 11 seconds left before halftime.

The first five minutes of the second half saw two Whitworth shots and a corner taken by both teams, but neither shot was on target.

Past the 60th minute, neither team could put together a significant attack, as Whitworth earned two corner kicks and had one play ruled offside, while the Loggers registered no corners, shots, or offside plays. The Pirates' Ubben and David Starkovich each took three shots apiece, while Ubben, Colin Shockman and Sam Selisch all tallied one shot on frame. The Loggers' King registered the only two saves on the day, and Whitworth was called for nine fouls while the Loggers heard the whistle seven times.

The Loggers look to salvage three points from the road trip Sunday, Oct. 20, as they travel to Walla Walla, Wash., and take on Whitman. That match will start at 2:30 p.m.
