Box Score SANTA CRUZ, Calif.—The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team earned its second victory in as many games with a solid 68-51 victory over St. Catherine in day two of the UC Santa Cruz Hampton Inn Classic at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The Loggers took their first and only lead they'd need at the halfway point of the first half. With 10:42 left in the half, Ashley Agcaoili made a layup to put Puget Sound up 14-12. Before that, the Wildcats saw four leads and three tie scores. After Agcaoili's layup, the Loggers extended the lead to 21-12, earning points from four different players.
A three-pointer by St. Catherine ended the 13-point Logger run, but Puget Sound continued to press. They scored 12 of the next 13 points to take a 33-16 lead with two minutes left to play in the first half. The Wildcats didn't quit on the half, though, and scored the final six points to cut the Logger lead to 11 going into the break.
Allie Wyszynski scored seven of the Loggers' first half points, leading both teams. Puget Sound outshot St. Catherine just 31.4% to 30.0%, but made 11 of their 35 attempts as opposed to the Wildcats' six made of 20 attempted.
With 17:20 left in the second half, the Loggers went on another run, scoring 12 of the next 15 points over five minutes, extending their advantage to 50-29. The Wildcats trimmed their deficit to 17, but could not come any closer until the end of the contest. Puget Sound put the game away with an 11-point run over the next three minutes, extending their lead to 28 at 63-35.
St. Catherine scored 16 of the final 21 points, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats. Puget Sound maintained the lead, winning the contest by 17.
The Loggers saw three players score in double digits. Amanda Forshay led all scorers with 13 points while Wyszynski and Emily Sheldon both scored 11 apiece. The Loggers outshot the Wildcats 36.8% to 21.4% and took 17 more attempts than the Wildcats. They also out rebounded the Wildcats 53-47 while turning the ball over 16 times as opposed to the Wildcats' 20.
Puget Sound (2-0, 0-0 NWC) will close out the UC Santa Cruz Hampton Inn Classic Sunday, Nov. 17, with a 1:00 p.m. contest against tournament host UC Santa Cruz.
