Box Score PORTLAND, Ore.—The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team continued its strong offensive play Tuesday night, dispatching Concordia (Ore.) 90-61 at the Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland, Ore.
The Loggers tallied 90 points Tuesday, hitting the 90-point mark for the first time since Nov. 25, 2012 at Southern Oregon. They also drained 33 field goals, their second-most since hitting 35 against St. Joe's two years ago to this date. In all, 11 of the 14 Puget Sound players who saw time Tuesday found the net, everyone scoring at least two points and three hitting double-digits.
Katy Ainslie tallied a career-high 19 points, scoring 12 of them in the first half. She hit double-digits for the second time this season, netting 10 to begin the year Nov. 15 versus Whittier. Also scoring 19, Amanda Forshay continued her hot streak. She made eight of 16 shots attempted, shooting 50% from both the floor and from beyond the arc. She added 13 rebounds, setting a new career mark in the category and tallying her first double-double of the year.
Also hitting double-digit points, Allie Wyszynski added 13 off the bench, matching her season-high. She's scored at least 10 points in each of the last four games and is fourth on the team with 9.8 a contest.
With the score tied at nine four minutes into the game, Puget Sound went on a 13-6 scoring run to take a five-point lead. Two back straight three-pointers from Concordia's Alicia Love evened the game at 21, but a three-ball from Taylor Jones game the Loggers a lead they'd never relinquish with 8:32 left in the first half.
After Jones' shot, the Loggers added eight more unanswered points to take a 32-21 lead with six minutes remaining. The Cavaliers drew within eight at the 4:03 mark, but the Loggers added 10 more points in final four minutes and headed into the locker room up 44-31.
Coming out of the break, the hosts drew within nine points again after scoring eight of the first 12 in the half. The Loggers responded with a 13-5 run of their own, pushing the lead out to 17 with 13:51 remaining.
Puget Sound took its first 20-point lead of the night at 8:53 when Wyszynski made a layup, putting the score at 74-53. That came amidst a 13-0 Puget Sound run which lasted 4:19. During that stretch, the Logger defense forced Concordia into five turnovers, scoring off three of them. With 5:19 left and the Loggers up 83-53, the teams essentially split the remaining points as Puget Sound scored seven more and Concordia eight in the final five minutes.
The teams shot for roughly the same percentage, with the Cavaliers' mark of 46.0% coming in just above the Loggers' 45.8%. The Loggers, however, took made 33 shots on 72 attempts instead of Concordia's 23 makes on 50 attempts. The Puget Sound defense also forced 20 turnovers throughout the game, besting the nine forced by Concordia, and Loggers won the rebounding battle 44-31.
Love led all players with 21 points, and two other Concordia players scored in double-digits as well. Forshay's 13 rebounds was also the game-high while Alexis Noren led all players with three steals. Also, freshman Ellie Moller scored her first collegiate points Tuesday night, netting a layup with 4:23 left in the game.
The Loggers will get right back at it Friday, Nov. 29 when they take on College of Idaho at the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic held in Caldwell, Idaho. That game will tip off at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. The next day, Puget Sound will take on Eastern Oregon at 2:00 p.m. Pacific, again at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
