Puget Sound offense cools in loss to College of Idaho

Box Score

CALDWELL, Idaho—The Puget Sound women's basketball team's offense cooled off a bit Friday, scoring 64 points in a 78-64 loss to the College of Idaho in both squads' first game of the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic held at the J.A. Albertson Center Caldwell, Idaho.

Host College of Idaho led for nearly the entire contest, scoring the game's first points on two free throws from Aleah Lowber. The Loggers tied it up a minute later with a jumper from Taylor Jones, the only time during the game the teams would be even. Over the next three minutes the hosts went on a 13-6 run, taking a 15-8 lead with 14:06 left to play in the half.

A field goal from Allie Wyszynski brought the Loggers within five at 15-10, but they next went nearly four minutes without another bucket. During those four minutes, the Yotes scored nine unanswered points and took a 24-10 lead. They pushed that lead out to 18 points, leading 36-18 with 3:41 left in the half.

At that point, the Puget Sound offense woke up a bit. Emily Sheldon hit two three-pointers in the final 4:41 while Ashley Agcaoili and Erin Stumbaugh added two points each to bring the Loggers within 10 at half. The Loggers shot 42.3% from field goal range in the first period, eclipsing the host's mark of 41.2%. The Yotes, however, made more field goals and more three-pointers in the first, netting 14 field goals and five from beyond the arc. Despite winning the rebounding battle 18-15, the Loggers turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, resulting in 14 Coyote points off Logger turnovers.

Three and a half minutes into the second half, College of Idaho held a 12-point lead thanks to three Coyote three-pointers countered by two Logger field goals and a free throw. At 16:35, however, Puget Sound embarked on a five-minute 14-7 run, trimming the Coyote lead to four. Amanda Forshay netted seven of those points during the run, making three layups and one free throw during the stretch.

Over the next three minutes, the Loggers kept even with their hosts, drawing within two points at 58-56 with 8:57 left in the half. The Coyotes didn't cede the game, however, and went on a 10-2 run to push their lead back to double-digits with 6:22 left to play. Sheldon scored the next four points to bring the Loggers back within six, but that was as close as Puget Sound would come. College of Idaho scored 10 of the final 12 points and took the contest 78-64.

As a team, the Loggers shot 38.5%, hitting 25 of 65 field goal attempts. They went just 2-15 beyond the arc, however, making two three-pointers all game. The Coyotes shot 43.6% from the floor and 37.0% from three-point range, netting 10 shots from beyond the arc. The Loggers once again won the rebounding battle 39-32, but 17 turnovers derailed the Loggers' offensive plans. 68 points and a 38.5% field goal range ended the Loggers' recent offensive hot streak. They scored at least 85 points and shot at least 45.0% in each of their last two games before entering Friday's contest.

Sheldon led the Loggers in scoring, tallying a career-high 19 points. Forshay hit double-digits for the third straight game, adding 17 points to the Puget Sound cause. College of Idaho's Elisha Hensey led all scorers, however, with 25 points. Both Forshay and the Coyotes' Chakala Charthenbogh grabbed eight rebounds, and Erica Martinez of College of Idaho nabbed four steals.

Puget Sound (4-2, 0-0 NWC) wraps up the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic Saturday, Nov. 30 with a 2:00 p.m. PST matchup against Eastern Oregon. That game will again be played at the J.A. Albertson Center in Caldwell, Idaho.
