Box Score OLYMPIA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team defeated the Evergreen State College Geoducks 73-69 in a back-and-forth battle at CRC Gymnasium Wednesday night.
After not playing for 11 days, the Loggers started slow, falling behind by as many as ten points in the first half when Puget Sound began to chip away at the Geoducks' lead.
Junior guard Olivia Roberts came off the bench to light up the scoreboard, hitting three 3-pointers in the first half alone and giving Puget Sound their first lead with 3:12 to play in the first half. Roberts helped propel the Loggers take an eight-point lead into the locker room.
The rest of the game would be a single-digit game all the way to the final buzzer. Puget Sound maintained a lead until the 9:00 mark of the second half when Evergreen State took a 51-50 lead. The Geoducks held that lead until sophomore forward Allie Wyszynkski put in two of her nine points to give the Loggers a 56-55 lead with 6:23 to play.
Try as they might, Puget Sound held off every push the Geoducks made. The Loggers clutch free throw shooting prevented any chance of relinquishing their lead, four Loggers combined to hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final 3:14. The final four free throws being made by Ashley Agcaoili to seal the 73-69 victory.
The Loggers as a team shot an impressive 53.1% from the field, including 44.4% from behind the 3-point line. Puget Sound scored 29 points off Evergreen State turnovers and the Logger bench, led by Olivia Roberts, outscored the Geoducks 31-10.
Roberts was the model of efficiency Wednesday night, scoring 14 points in 16 minutes off just six shots. Junior guard Amanda Forshay led the Loggers with a season-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds. Guard Emily Sheldon was the team's assist leader with five on the night.
Puget Sound was the first Northwest Conference team to defeat Evergreen State, who has already defeated Pacific Lutheran, Linfield, Lewis & Clark and Pacific. The win improves the Loggers' record to 6-2 on the young season, while Evergreen State dips below .500 at 4-5.
The Loggers are off until Friday, Dec. 20 when they host the Banana Slugs of UC-Santa Cruz at 5:00 p.m., their last non-conference game before beginning Northwest Conference play Friday, Jan. 3.
