Loggers Fall 7-2 In Crucial Match At Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Puget Sound women's tennis team's lengthy winning streak came to a halt with a 7-2 loss at Whitworth on Friday. The Loggers (13-4, 7-4 NWC) had won 10 straight matches coming into the weekend but fell for the first time in over a month.

Whitworth  (7-8, 6-5 NWC) swept through the doubles to open the match and take a commanding lead. The Pirates took the No. 1 and No. 3 matches 8-4 but were pushed a bit more in the No. 2 match. After a close fight, the Bucs' Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield defeated Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman 8-6 to take the 3-0 lead in the match.

After Maddie Thiesse fell 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 match, Thompson and Jeena Gerdsen came away with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Thompson breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Taylor Pena at No. 3 and Gerdsen gutted out a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Jessi Steele at No. 2.

However, the Pirates went on to take the final three singles matches to win a crucial match in the chase for a spot in the NWC Tournament. The Loggers are now tied for third with Linfield as each have five points in the standings. Whitworth has four points and needs to win 6-3 over Pacific Lutheran tomorrow to garner a fifth point in the standings.

If the Loggers can defeat first place Whitman tomorrow, they will clinch the third seed in the NWC Tournament. However, a loss paired with a Whitworth win of 6-3 or better could leave the Loggers out of the tournament all together based on tie breaking procedures.

Tomorrow's match in Walla Walla, Wash. is scheduled to begin at noon.
