Early Lead Fades In 6-3 Loss To Willamette

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's tennis team took an early lead in the match but couldn't hold on in a 6-3 loss to Willamette. The Loggers (2-12, 1-9 NWC) led after doubles but the Bearcats (6-9, 6-4 NWC) took five singles points to take the match.

Graham Baker and Michael Cutter scored an upset win in No. 1 doubles, taking down the Willamette duo ranked 11th in the West. Cutter and Baker defeated Sam Wexman and Josh Wong 9-8 (7-3) to give the Loggers a 2-1 lead in the match.

Michael Tieu and John Stevens won No. 3 doubles 8-4. Willamette's Will Cooper and Devin Abney scored an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Baker kept the momentum into his singles match with a 6-3, 3-6 7-6 (7-5) win over Wexman in the No. 2 match. However, Willamette took the other five points for the comeback win.

Wong defeated Cutter 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 match. Cooper defeated Deuel at No. 3 and Gunnar Lee beat John Stevens at No. 6 both by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Abe Noyes fell to Jack Schreiber 6-3, 6-3. Jake Peterson pushed Devin Abney in the No. 4 match but lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The Loggers wrap up their season with two home matches next weekend. They host Whitworth on Saturday at 10 a.m.
