FOREST GROVE, Ore.—The Puget Sound men's tennis team kicked off its 2014 campaign Friday night at Pacific, falling to the host Boxers 9-0 at the Holce Tennis Courts in Forest Grove, Ore.
Two Loggers took their singles matches to three sets as Myles Rivera-Flam went three against Reuben Mulhern in the No. 3 slot. Rivera-Flam won the first set 4-6, but fell 6-3 in the second. The deciding third set went to a tiebreak, which Mulhern won 8-6 for the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(8-6) decision.
At No 5 singles, John Stevens also went to three sets. Stevens won the first-set tiebreak 5-7, taking the set 6-7(5-7). Pacific's Jason Voss came back to sweep the second set 6-0 before prevailing in a super tiebreak 10-3 for the singles win.
Jake Peterson also saw a tiebreak in his singles match. In the sixth position, he battled Ben Ryweck, falling 7-6(7-1) in the first. Ryweck swept the second set 6-0 to complete the two-set victory. In the lead singles slot, Daniel Deuel forced an extra game in the second set. He fell to opponent Troy Zuroske 6-4, 7-5 to begin the 2014 season, however.
Pacific also won all three doubles matches. The closest doubles match came in the No. 2 position where Deuel and Peterson took games against Giancarlo Battaglia and Alen Suklje of Pacific. The Boxers' duo won that match 8-4.
The Loggers (0-1, 0-1 NWC) next take the court Friday, Feb. 28 when they host Willamette in their first home match of the season. That contest will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Tennis Pavilion on the University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma, Wash.
