TACOMA, Wash.—Playing in the final home dual final home dual of their careers, the seniors of the Puget Sound women's tennis team led the Loggers to a big 8-1 victory over cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran Friday at the on-campus Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers seniors went undefeated against the Lutes Friday, winning five of the Loggers' eight points in the dual. Three seniors won singles matches for Puget Sound as Jenna Gerdsen and Logan Thompson both tallied 6-2, 6-1 victories against their Lutes competitors. Gerdson beat Megan Beyers at No. 3 singles for her fourth singles victory of the season. Thompson tallied her two-set victory atop the singles lineup, dispatching Samantha Lund for the win.
Fellow senior Marissa Friedman also won her singles match, defeating Leah Newell in a third-set tiebreaker. She won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 2-6. She prevailed in the match tiebreak 12-10 to hang on for the victory.
Malia Ford and Allison Embernate also tallied two-set singles victories against Pacific Lutheran.
In doubles play, Friedman and Thompson teamed up to take down Lund and Newell 9-8 atop the doubles lineup. At No. 2 doubles, Ford and senior Holly Dixon won by a similar 9-8 score over Allison McClure and Mariah Siemion.
Embernate and Sarah Nielsen capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
With the win, Puget Sound advances to 6-4 on the year, 5-4 in Northwest Conference play. They're now one game behind the Lutes for fourth in the conference standings and the final spot in the conference tournament. The Loggers will next head to Portland, Ore., and take on Lewis & Clark Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m.
