Women's tennis win first of year, men fall at home

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the year over visiting College of Idaho while the men's team fell to Whitman.

The Logger women (1-4, 0-4 NWC) narrowly edged the College of Idaho, 5-4. Elizabeth Chao won both of her matches, first as the No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2) and second as a part of the No. 1 doubles pair with Teresa Bild. As a pair, Chao and Bild won 8-6. Farrell Ahlf won in the No. 3 singles spot (6-0, 6-2) and teamed up with Tamara Runnicles in the No. 3 doubles to defeat the Coyotes, 8-5.

With each team having won four matches, the final match decided the winning team. For Puget Sound, Alison Goo fell in the first set, 4-6 but won the second set, 6-2 to force a third set. She won the final set, 6-3, to give the Logger women their first win of the year.

The Logger men (0-6, 0-6 NWC) fell, 9-0 but several doubles teams gave the Missionaries a hard time. The No. 2 doubles pair of Daniel Deuel and Chris Severt won three sets but fell 8-3 while the No. 1 pair of Andrew Struzenberg Joe McRoberts lost 8-3 as well.

The Puget Sound women play again tomorrow, Sunday, March 8 at home against Willamette at 10am while the men's team returns to action next weekend, Saturday, March 14, as it hosts Whitworth at 2pm.
