Women's basketball begins season with loss against Saints

TACOMA, Washington – Kirstin Hafeman scored a team-high 15 points, and Claire Fitzgerald added 14, but the Puget Sound women's basketball team began its 2017-18 season with a 74-57 loss against St. Martin's in the first day of the Doug McArthur Classic in Memorial Fieldhouse Friday night.

The Loggers (0-1) struggled to find their shooting touch and finished with a 30.8 field-goal percentage. The Saints (1-0), on the other hand, shot 43.9 percent from the floor.

Hafeman shot 5-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in 19 minutes of action. Fitzgerald shot 5-for-13 from the floor, and added five rebounds.

Meghan Hamel led the Loggers in rebounding with seven, and Mara Henderson finished with six boards.

Puget Sound trailed by just three points, 41-38, early in the third quarter, but St. Martin's closed out the quarter with a 12-2 run and did not let the Loggers get closer than nine points.

Puget Sound concludes the McArthur Classic against Claremont-M-S on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m.
