TACOMA, Washington – With its season-opening win in the rearview, the Puget Sound football team hits the road to Spokane, Washington where the Loggers take on Whitworth Saturday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m.
The Loggers began the 2020-21 season with a 28-20 win over Pacific Lutheran (Feb. 6) in Baker Stadium. Senior running back Duncan Varela was named the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for offense after he scored three touchdowns and rushed for 132 yards.
Sophomore kicker Jonah Mendelsohn was the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week for special teams after connecting on all four of his point-after attempts.
Jack Bonicatto recorded a career-high 108 receiving yards in the win over the Lutes.
When the Loggers and Pirates went head-to-head during the 2019 season in Baker Stadium, Puget Sound pulled off a historic 34-23 victory. It was the Loggers' first win over Whitworth since 1995.
In that game, Puget Sound quarterback Murdock Rutledge threw for 214 yards and ran for 96. The Loggers' defense set the tone early when Zachary Meyer and Ryan Hickey both recovered fumbles in the first quarter.
This weekend is the Pirates' first game of the year.
