Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – The Puget Sound women's basketball team erased a 17-point halftime deficit, but the Loggers lost a heartbreaker in overtime at Whitworth, 93-92, Saturday night.
Five Loggers scored in double figures. Jordyn Reverman totaled a team-high 19 points off the bench, while Sophie Nilsson and Samantha Swartout each added 16 points. Katie Minnehan netted 13 points and led the team in rebounds (8) and assists (7). Kennedy Brown contributed 11 points.
Puget Sound shot just 28.1-percent from the floor in first half, and it entered the locker room in a 44-27 deficit.
Things didn't look any better when the Pirates' first two possessions of the second half both resulted in 3-pointers. Still, the Loggers remained in striking distance entering the fourth quarter, down just 61-50.
In the Loggers' first two possessions of the fourth quarter, Brown and Swartout hit 3-pointers. A layup by Reverman cut Whitworth's lead to single digits, 66-58, with 8:43 left in regulation. Four minutes later, it become a one-possession game.
Georgia Lavinder hit a trey, the Loggers' defense forced a turnover, and Reverman made another close shot to bring the Loggers to within 76-73 with four minutes left. Coming out of a timeout, a Paige Gerhart 3-pointer tied the game, 76-76.
Whitworth had the lead, 80-78, and the ball with 35 seconds left, but the Pirates missed a shot and Gerhart pulled down the rebound. Without a timeout, Puget Sound worked down the game clock and Minnehan broke free for a layup that sent the game into overtime.
The Pirates raced out to a three-point lead early in overtime, but Puget Sound remained close. The Loggers finally broke through to take the lead, 91-90, when Reverman made a couple of free-throws.
However, a couple of possessions later, Whitworth narrowly beat the buzzer with a game-winning 3-pointer.
Saturday marked Puget Sound's most points in a game since Dec. 2018 when the Loggers beat Chapman, 96-87.
The Loggers are set to return to Memorial Fieldhouse to host Whitman, Feb. 19-20.
