TACOMA, Washington – The drought is over. For the first time since April 2016, the Puget Sound men's tennis team won an NCAA match. The Loggers beat Pacific Lutheran, 5-4, in the Tennis Pavilion Saturday.
The day began Puget Sound winning two of the three doubles matches, both of which came down to match point. Nicholas Pulido and Levi Buck won at No. 2 doubles, 8-7, and Julian Giomi and Paul Wallace won by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Mike Smolskis won his No. 2 singles match (6-3, 6-4). Giomi won at No. 4 singles in three sets, and Pulido needed two sets to win at No. 6 singles.
Meanwhile, in Parkland, Washington, the Logger women lost against the Lutes, 5-4. Andie Machida and Lia Van Steer were responsible for three of the Loggers' wins. The pair won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Machida then won at No. 1 singles, and so did Van Steeter at No. 2 singles.
Ainsley Nelson and Tatyana Cox dominated at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
The Logger teams return to competition in two weeks against Pacific.
