McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Senior guard Antwan Williams (Portland,
Ore./Madison) took over in the second half, scoring 22 points in
the final 20 minutes, as the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers held
of a pesky Linfield Wildcat squad, 87-78, in a Northwest Conference
men's basketball game on Saturday night at Ted Wilson Gymnasium in
McMinnville, Ore.
In the first half, the Loggers took the lead about midway though
the first period put it wasn't until the one minute mark that the
Loggers were able to put the lead into double-digits, using a
jumper by Conner Gehring (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap) hit a
jumper wth 1:13 remaining to push the Logger lead to 41-30.
A pair of Linfield points cut the UPS lead to nine at
halftime, 41-32.
In the second half, Williams came alive but the Wildcats didn't
lay down, continuing to put up a fight. Linfield wore down
the UPS lead and even took a lead of their own with 7:14 remaining
but the Loggers eventually woke up gradually building the lead
back up to take the 87-78 victory.
The Loggers were led by 24 points from Williams, who also added
three assists and a pair of steals. Junior Austin Boyce
(Kent, Wash./Kentwood) added 11 points and Colin Koach (Portland,
Ore./Franklin) came off the bench to add 10 points in the
win.
The Loggers showed their discipline in the game, turning the
ball over just six times on the night. It marked the first
time since Mar. 10, 2006 that the Loggers committed single digit
turnovers and it is the lowest number of turnovers for the Loggers
since they committed just six turnovers on Jan. 8, 2000 against
Whitman.
Linfield was led by 22 points from Erik Olson. K.C. Wiser
and Cody Tesoro each added 15 points in the losing effort.
The Loggers take the court again on Tuesday night when they take
on Pacific Lutheran on Pink Zone night. Tip-off with the
Lutes is set for 8:00 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear pink to
support breast cancer awareness.
