TACOMA, Wash. - On the surface, it looked like just another
Northwest Conference victory but the sixth-ranked Puget Sound
Loggers set a new school record, winning their 14th-straight game,
100-79, over the George Fox Bruins in a NWC men's basketball game
on Saturday night at Memorial FIeldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first half, it looked like the Bruins might be able to
play with the Loggers, not allowing UPS to build a lead of more
than nine. Senior Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) led
the way for Puget Sound in the first half, putting up 10 points on
four-of-five shooting to give the Loggers a 48-42 halftime lead.
In the second half, the more experienced Loggers took over
pushing the lead into double-digits just over three minutes in on a
three-pointer from freshman Nadav Heyman (Corvallis, Ore.). The
lead hit 20 points with 12:13 left to play on the second free throw
from senior Jason Foster (Spanaway, Wash./Henry Foss). The Logger
reserves took over soon after that but the large lead remained as
the Loggers cruised to their 14th-straight win, 100-79.
With the win, the Loggers set a new school record for
consecutive wins, passing the mark of 13 which was set first in
1967-68 and then again in 1975-76.
The Loggers were led by 19 points each from Foster and Antwan
Williams (Portland, Ore./Madison). Krauel finished with 12 on the
night and Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) chipped in 10 points
in the win. The Loggers forced 27 GFU turnovers on the night,
collected 15 steals.
George Fox was led by 15 points from Evan Atwater. Steve
Campbell came off the bench to add 13 and Travis Toedtemeir chipped
in 11 points in the losing effort.
The Loggers will look to clinch home court advantage for the NWC
Championship Tournament on Friday when they play host to Whitworth.
Tip-off with the Pirates is set for 8:00 p.m. at Memorial
Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
