TACOMA, Wash. - Putting up 12 runs in their first at-bat and 25
runs on the day, the Puget Sound Loggers picked up a pair of
five-inning wins over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 14-1 and
11-3, in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon in Tacoma, Wash.
In the bottom of the first inning, senior Meghan Watson (Brier,
Wash./Mountlake Terrace) singled in Hilary Rice (St. Paul, Minn/St.
Paul Academy) and the Loggers followed that with 11 more runs
before the third out was made, including two-run home runs by
freshman Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) and freshman
Aanthea Aasen (University Place, Wash./Wilson).
The Loggers added one more in the bottom of the second and yet
another in the bottom of the fourth to collect the 14-1
victory. Sophomore Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway,
Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) collected the win, striking out four with no
walks in four innings pitched. Kristin Breninger took the
loss for L&C, allowing seven runs on five hits in just
one-third of an inning. Watson, Grause and Victoria
Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) all finished the game with two runs
scored and three RBIs.
In the second game, the Pioneer bats came alive as Lewis &
Clark struck for three runs in the top of the first. The
Loggers answered back in the bottom half of the inning with five
runs on five hits and one L&C error. Puget Sound
collected two more in the second, one coming on an RBI double by
Raeburn that scored Watson and another on a single by Alex Usher
(Carson, Wash./Stevenson) that scored Grause.
The final four runs came in the bottom of the fourth.
Grause scored on a wild pitch to put the Loggers up, 8-3 and then
Usher belted a three-run home run to put the Loggers up by eight as
they collected the five-inning victory, 11-3. Andi
Doerflinger (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) collected the win,
striking out six L&C batters and allowing just one earned run
in five innings pitched. Caroline DeVincenzi took the loss
for L&C, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits with four walks in four
innings pitched. Usher was the star of game two, going
three-for-three from the plate with two runs scored and 5 RBIs.
The Loggers hit the diamond again on Sunday as they play host to
George Fox in a NWC doubleheader. First pitch with the Bruins
is set for Noon.
