McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Sophomore Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel,
Calif./Torrey Pines) scored 11 times and set up two
other scores to lead Puget Sound to a 22-15 win over Linfield
Sunday afternoon at the Linfield lacrosse field. The host Wildcats
jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but once the Loggers started scoring,
they didn't let up.
It was the season-opening match for UPS, the Wildcats' Northwest
lacrosse rival. Linfield dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
Sammy Smith netted five goals and an assist, Tarie Caouette
scored four goals and added an assist, and Michelle Dorris notched
three goals for the Wildcats.
Linfield was first off the mark with four goals in the opening
10 minutes. The game's initial goal was scored by Caouette,
followed by two consecutive tallies from freshman Anna
Gorciak. Smith then made it 4-0 off a penalty restart.
UPS notched its first goal at the 14-minute mark through Lama.
Linfield immediately responded with Smith coming around the right
side of the goal from the backside and slipping a shot past Loggers
goalkeeper Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School).
Katie Schlesinger (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) scored the
first of her three goals later for Puget Sound to make the score
5-2. The Wildcats restored their four-goal cushion when Dorris
scored from a penalty restart.
The Loggers mounted a late first-half comeback when Lama scored
four quick goals to tie the game at 6. With five minutes left,
freshman Kristine Morris (Tiburno, Calif./San Francisco
University) gave UPS its first lead. But Caouette tied the
contest at 7 just a minute later, running in unassisted for the
goal.
The flurry of late first-half score included another goal by
Dorris, who pounced on a loose ball in front of net to help the
Wildcats take their final lead of the day. Lama scored twice in the
last two minutes, the second with an open net after drawing a foul
from Linfield keeper Becca Levy. Schlesinger scored her second and
Elizabeth Butt (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) scored her first to extend
the Logger lead to three at 11-8. Butt finished the match with
three goals.
Puget Sound was quickest off the line in the second half with
Butt scoring just 10 seconds into the period.
Martha Inouye helped rally the Wildcats soon after with a long
diagonal run into the crease before passing off to Smith to score.
Then Lama scored twice to extend the Logger lead to five at 14-9
and Anna Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) scored
her first of the match with 20 minutes left. Dorris scored for
Linfield from a Smith pass before UPS's Jessica
Knight (Portland, Ore./Grant) put herself on the
score-sheet in the 42nd minute with a low shot to the right side.
Lama struck again after a rebounded shot to give the Loggers a
seven-goal lead. Caouette slotted her third goal with a low shot
with 12 minutes left in the game to cut the Logger lead to six.
Puget Sound then came back with a flurry of three goals in two
minutes. Lama scored the first, followed by Butt and Knight.
Caouette tallied from long range with a line drive straight to the
lower right corner. Smith was on the end of a pass from Tiffany
Jones to score with a bouncing shot to the left side and then
scored another on a foul restart to make the score 20-14. Inouye
scored for the 'Cats on a foul restart to cut the Logger lead
to five. Lama came straight back for Puget Sound with her 11th
goal. Cathy Soukup (Los Alamitos, Calif.) bagged the Loggers'
final goal to complete the scoring.
Levy made 17 saves in goal for the Wildcats as the Loggers
outshot the hosts by a 45-30 margin. Calciano stopped eight shots
for UPS.
The Loggers head down to California next weekend for a
trio of games against West Region competition.
