PARKLAND, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers took advantage of the
Pacific Lutheran Lutes in the first game but the Lutes had the last
laugh, winning the nightcap, as the two teams split a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at PLU softball field
in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first game, the Loggers struck first as Victoria Raeburn
(Gladstone, Ore.) singled to left field to score Hilary Rice (St.
Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and give Puget Sound the 1-0
lead. Puget Sound struck again in the top of the third when
Raeburn took advantage of a PLU error to score from second.
Anthea Aasen (University Place, Wash./Wilson) then singled up the
middle to score Kelsey Scanlan (La Center, Wash.) from third and
then Rice reached on a fielders choice that scored Jessie Holbrook
(Port Townsend, Wash.) from third for a 4-0 Logger lead.
The Lutes got back within one run with three runs of their own
in the bottom of the inning but the Loggers pushed the lead
back to three runs in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single by
Meghan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace). PLU scored
one more time in the bottom of the fifth but that was all they
would get as the Loggers collected the 6-4 win.
Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) collected the
win, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched
with eight strikeouts and one walk. Rachel Wheeler took the
loss for PLU, allowing six runs, just one earned, on 10 hits in
seven innings pitched with three strikeouts and three walks.
In the second game, it looked like the Loggers might be headed
for a sweep as they scored two on a double by Raeburn that scored
Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) and Watson. The
Loggers made it 3-0 in the third when Grause doubled in Watson but
the Lutes finally earned their way on the scoreboard with a run in
the bottom of the inning. Raeburn got another RBI in the
fifth on a single that scored Rice for a 4-1 Logger lead but the
Lutes exploded for four runs in the final frame to collect the 5-4
comeback win.
Stacey Hagensen collected the win for PLU, allowing four runs on
seven hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk.
Sperberg took the loss for UPS, allowing four runs on five hits in
one and two-third innings of relief.
The Loggers and Lutes will go at it again on Sunday afternoon in
a NWC doubleheader at Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.
