TACOMA, Wash. - A single by Carolyn Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy
Names) in the bottom of the seventh was enough to score Victoria
Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) from third as the Puget Sound Loggers
completed the 5-4 comeback win over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in
the second game of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on
Sunday afternoon at Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Lutes took the opener, 6-5, in extra innings.
In the first game, the Lutes took the lead on an RBI single by
Stacey Hagensen in the top of the first for the 1-0
advantage. The Lutes made it 2-0 in the fourth on a solo home
run by Hagensen and then two more runs in the top of the sixth put
PLU up by four, 4-0. The Loggers finally got on the board in
the bottom of the sixth when Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent
Valley) singled upt he middle to score Hilary Rice (St. Paul,
Minn./St. Paul Academy). The Loggers added three more runs
before the Lutes were finally able to get out the inning but not
before Puget Sound evened things up at 4-4.
Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh inning so
the teams went to extra frames as the Lutes took advantage, scoring
two runs in the top of the eighth. The Loggers tried to
answer back in the bottom of the inning as Raeburn scored on a
fielding error but the Lutes got the final out to collect the 6-4
win. Hagensen collected the win, allowing one run on two hits
in two innings pitched. Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway,
Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) took the loss, allowing six runs on eight
hits in eight innings pitched with 13 strike outs and just one
walk.
In the nightcap, the Loggers struck first as Raeburn grounded
out to second, allowing Meghan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake
Terrace) to score for a 1-0 lead after one inning. Puget
Sound made it 3-0 in the second on a pair of RBI doubles from
Kelsey Scanlan (La Center, Wash./Clark CC) and Megan Janes
(Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe). PLU evened the game up in the
top of the fourth on a three-run home run by Cathy Kirkevold.
The Lutes took the lead in the top of the seventh when Crystal
Reno hit a pinch-hit home run for a 4-3 lead heading into the final
at-bat for the Loggers. Puget Sound stepped up when they
needed to, tying the game up on a two-out error that allowed Grause
to score and then Moore drove in the game winning run with her
single to shortstop for the 5-4 win.
Sperberg got the win, allowing one run on two hits in two
innings of relief. Hagensen took the loss for PLU, allowing
five runs on 10 hits in six and two-thirds innings pitched.
The Loggers finish the season with a record of 16-24 and 10-17
