TACOMA, Wash. - Playing under the lights of Lower Baker Field,
the Puget Sound Loggers fell to West Coast rival Claremont-M-S,
18-10, in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Friday
night in Tacoma, Wash.
After the Loggers and Athenas traded goals to open the
game, Claremont-M-S scored five straight to take a 6-1 lead midway
through the first half. Sophomore Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel,
Calif./Torrey Pines) led the Puget Sound comeback, scoring three
goals during a 4-2 UPS run that brought the score to 8-5 heading
into the half.
In the second half, the Loggers kept the offensive pressure on
the Athena defense but the CMS offense continued to answer the
Loggers' call. Despite five more second half goals, the
Loggers never could catch Claremont, falling 18-10.
Puget Sound was led by six goals and two assists from
Lama. Katie Schlesigner (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) added
two more and Elizabeth Butt (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) and Anna
Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) finished with one
goal each. Sophomore goalie Ana Calciano (Farmington,
Conn./Miss Porter's School) made 12 saves for the Loggers.
Claremont-M-S was led by five goals from Sarah Dick and four
more from Courtney Cronin. Devon Scott added three more for
the Athenas. Katie Campbell-Morrison was solid in net for
CMS, making 18 saves and allowing just 10 goals.
The Loggers will set their alarms early for Saturday morning as
they have a 9:00 a.m. showdown with Pomona-Pitzer scheduled on East
Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.
