NEWBERG, Ore. - The Puget Sound Loggers came out firing but the
George Fox Bruins turned the table in the second half to stun the
defending Northwest Conference champions, 79-72, in a NWC men's
basketball game on Saturday in Newberg, Ore.
The Loggers exploded out the gate, building a double-digit lead
less than eight minutes into the game, using a layup by Riggs
Yarbro (Moses Lake, Wash./Moses Lake Christian) to take a 17-6 lead
with 12:22 left in the first half. The Loggers continued to
build the lead, using another Yarbro layup to go up by 15 points
with 9:28 left in the first period. The Bruins chipped away
at the lead but Puget Sound was in the drivers seat heading into
halftime, leading 41-30.
It looked like the Loggers would be able to cruise to victory in
the second half by the wheels began to fall off around the 15
minute mark as the Bruins scored eight unanswered points to climb
within three points, 51-48, with 14:03 left to play. George
Fox finally tied the game up with 10:06 left to play on a
three-pointer by Jack Martin. A 14-3 run put the Bruins up by
seven points with 7:07 left to play and the Loggers just couldn't
get back into the game as George Fox picked up the surprising
victory, 79-72.
The Loggers were led by 17 points off the bench from
Yarbro. Senior Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) added 15
points to go with nine rebounds, including seven-of-seven on free
throws. Colin Koach (Portland, Ore./Franklin) added 14 points
in the losing effort.
The Bruins were led by 26 points and 14 rebounds from Alex
Stockner. Rich Smith and Martin each added 17 points in the
win. George Fox outrebounded the Loggers, 44 to 33.
The Loggers will look to bounce back on Sunday evening when they
travel to McMinnville, Ore. to take on Linfield. Tip with the
Wildcats is set for 6:00 p.m.
