WALLA WALLA, Wash. – One day after giving eighth-ranked
Whitworth all they could handle, the Puget Sound Loggers simply ran
out of gas against the Whitman Missionaries, falling 88-69 in a
Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Saturday night
at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla, Wash.
The Loggers held a lead through the first few minutes of the
contest but Whitman found a way to battle back as the two teams
stayed close for most of the first half. The Missionaries blew the
game open, using a 14-3 run to pull ahead by 11 points with about
two minutes to go in the first half and Whitman carried the
momentum into halftime, taking a 49-39 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Loggers just couldn't find a way back
into the game as the Missionaries continued to keep Puget Sound off
the lead by double-digits. Whitman eventually tired the Loggers
enough to push the lead to 19 points as they collected the 88-69
victory.
Puget Sound was led by 16 points from sophomore Nadav Heyman
(Corvallis, Ore.). Conner Gehring (Port Orchard, Wash./South
Kitsap) finished the game with 12 points while Bryce Levin
(Everett, Wash.) and David Aberg (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) each
added 10 points.
Whitman was led by 26 points off the bench from LaQuam Thompson.
Justin Artis and Jordan Wheeler each finished with 18 points on the
night. Whitman forced 18 Puget Sound turnovers on the night,
capitalizing for 24 points off the giveaways.
The Loggers return home next weekend to conclude the 2010 season as
they play host to Pacific on Friday night and Lewis & Clark on
Saturday.
